The curious case of Gwyneth Paltrow

This ex-Calvin Klein model is currently in the news for being the proud owner of the most toned legs in the business. At the same time the yoga-fanatic , macrobiotic foodie , A-lister actress, seems to have it all and clearly has the best PR minions working around her, sending the media into overdrive at her appearances at various promotional events. This relatively unambitious English actress who used to date Brad Pitt and Ben Affleck among others can now boast (in Hollywood terms) a successful marriage to modern rock legend Chris Martin for 7 years. After shocking the world naming her kid Apple and Moses(not so strange) she got out of her London home and revived her career along with that of Robert Downey Jr through the record breaking Iron Man series. Mrs Chris Martin can also be counted as one of the oldest (still ravishing) love-interest cum damsel- in-distress (she’s 38) of a superhero. She also has the ‘honour’ of playing the assistant with the strangest name Pepper Pots.

Her admitting on stage that she wasn’t worthy of winning the Oscar that year over Cate Blanchett’s Elizabeth and Meryl Streep was the bravest and probably most humble acceptance speeches in Oscar history. And instead of diving into money spinning blockbuster movies, she chose to make films close to her heart like Sylvia, and was soon settled into holy matrimony and domesticity.

She is also one of Hollywood’s most well connected and influential people and one of the few to count herself as Madonna’s close friend; along with Stella McCartney and Valentino. Despite not starring in any heavyweight movies she still commands a pay check in the region of $10 million.

By the way she also happens to be a very successful entrepreneur. Apart from an April 1999 car accident scandal and her being misquoted by a magazine, she has had a rather clean track record in PR terms. In a voyeuristic world when everyone is a paparazzo, Gwyneth has perfected the art of allowing the media only a certain distance into her private life. She somehow manages to look calm, composed and elegant and top best-dressed lists all at the same time. (And she had the least ugly break-up in Hollywood, and that too from Brad Pitt; with whom she is rumoured to co-star with in a new movie in the works.) Being born into Hollywood royalty; the daughter of noted film director Bruce Paltrow and Tony award-winning actress Blythe Danner; it sure taught her how to play the media, if not as good as Angelina does it. And just like Angelina is with charitable causes, Gwyneth holds the breast cancer cause close to her heart.

She still graces Estée Lauder ad covers earning a cool $3 million a year. She has a $10 million contract with them for promoting their brand. Estée Lauder donates a minimum of $500,000 of sales of items from the ‘Pleasures Gwyneth Paltrow’ collection to breast cancer research. She also earns quite a packet as the spokesperson for Tod’s.

Domesticity or good judgement not to hurt Chris’ ego so as to stay married has probably made Ms Paltrow so laid back. She is blessed with a golden voice, and had she been as ambitious as she should be, would have sold multi-platinum selling albums by now. She has shown off her sparkling voice in the film Duets (2000) and was nominated for a Grammy recently for a book read.

And reportedly she earned a staggering $3.6 million to sing one three minute song on the big screen – making her the highest paid actress ever for a cameo appearance; for playing singer Peggy Lee and singing “This Thing Called Love” in a star-studded biopic of legendary writer Truman Capote called Infamous.

How can someone like as laidback as Gwyneth be still relevant in Hollywood’s fast, shrewd and backbiting world? Gwyneth is the perfect antithesis to a Hollywood ‘wife’ by managing the ‘juggling act’ that well, and still making millions. She comes across relevant with the times, each time; as she comes out of hibernation and out of changing her kid’s nappies.
